This is did not occur in the ’80s, but this was performed by an ’80s icon – Whitney Houston.
“The Star Spangled Banner” was performed by Houston at Super Bowl XXV on January 27, 1991. The game ended up being historic, with poor Scott Norwood missing the game winning field goal in the end.
This performance of the National Anthem is considered to be one of the best performances of all time.
On a personal note, I missed this game as I was serving in the Persian Gulf, right in the middle of Desert Storm. When I got back home, the cassingle was still out, and I made sure I got it. And I had seen this performance later on.
Poor Scott Norwood. I liked him way back when he kicked for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL (there’s another 80s connection for you). I’m about the only person who thinks of him as a Stallion first, then the poor guy who missed that field goal. And, seeing how it was a 40+ yard attempt, it was no chip shot.
I never knew that he was in the USFL! I only remember Herschel Walker (of course) and Jim Kelly. That is a great idea for an article!
Oh, there were plenty of stars…Doug Flutie, Steve Young, Reggie White, Doug Williams, etc.
The USFL and the MISL would be excellent article ideas. Yeah, the MISL started in the late 70s, but it really hit its peak in the 80s. Here are the first places you want to go for research:
