One Hit Wonders of the ’80s: 1982 – Toni Basil

“Mickey” by Toni Basil

Toni Basil’s choreography work dates back to the ’60s, which includes 1964’s Pajama Party and The Monkees’ 1968 film Head. However, Basil is most known for her smash hit, “Mickey”. The song was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn as “Kitty“, it was first recorded by the UK group Racey. Basil changed the name from Kitty to Mickey to make the song about a man, and because she was fond of The Monkees’ Micky Dolenz after meeting him on the set of their movie Head.

The song reached number 1 on December 11, 1982 , for one week. Basil proved to be ahead of her time, as “Mickey” was actually recorded in 1980 and the video was conceived, directed, and choreographed by Basil herself for the UK-based label Radial Choice nearly a year before the inception of MTV in 1981.
When the song was released in 1982, it became a staple on MTV. In the video, Basil wore her head cheerleader uniform from Las Vegas High School from which she graduated. During an interview on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of The 80’s”, Basil revealed that she still owns the same cheerleader sweater she wore in the video. “Mickey” was named #5 on VH1’s 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of all time, #16 on 20 to 1’s Top 20 One Hit Wonders Countdown and #7 on VH1’s 100 Greatest Songs of the ’80s.

Basil has continued to work in choreography. She has worked with Bette Midler for many years, most recently on her 2008/2009 Las Vegas show The Showgirl Must Go On. She also served as the associate director and choreographer of the worldwide Tina Turner Live: 50th Anniversary Concert Tour in 2008/2009. Her expertise as a choreographer led her to be invited to sit as a guest judge on season four and five of Fox Television’s So You Think You Can Dance.

For us 80s fans, Basil will forever be beloved for her hit, “Mickey”:

Paul Williams a legendary songwriter who penned some famous songs from the ’70s and ’80s, including Three Dog Night’s “An Old Fashioned Love Song“, the Carpenters’ “We’ve Only Just Begun“, and best of all, “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppet Movie!

In addition to his music career, Williams also acted in several movies and television shows. He played Virgil, the genius orangutan in Battle for the Planet of the Apes. On Feb. 9, 1973, Williams combined his singing and acting careers on the Tonight Show, singing a song dressed as Virgil:

He made numerous television appearances in the 1970s and 1980s, including guest appearances on Hawaii Five-O, Match Game ’79, The Love Boat, The Hardy Boys, The Odd Couple (as himself), The Muppet Show, The Fall Guy, and The Gong Show.

However, his most popular acting role was Little Enos Burdette in Smokey and the Bandit. He played the son of Big Enos (Pat McCormick), who bet the Bandit to get him to haul shipments to different states. In the original (1977) they got him to bootleg 400 cases of Coors beer from Texarkana, Texas to the “Southern Classic” in Georgia— in 28 hours:

In Smokey and the Bandit II (1980), the bandit had to haul an elephant to the GOP National Convention.

And in Smokey and the Bandit III, Burt Reynolds had a smaller role. This time, Big Enos (McCormick) and Little Enos (Williams) offering a sizeable wager on one’s ability to transport a shipment a large distance in a short period of time. Offering a slight twist, however, the offer is this time made to a retiring Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Gleason), betting $250,000 against his badge on his ability to transport a large stuffed fish from an eatery in Florida from Texas.

The American people, the most generous on earth, who created the highest standard of living, are not going to accept the notion that we can only make a better world for others by moving backwards ourselves. Those who believe we can have no business leading the nation.
