Sidney Poitier, who was the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor (for his role in Lilies of the Field), directed Stir Crazy, which was the third largest grossing film in 1980, behind The Empire Strikes Back and Nine to Five.

Stir Crazy starred Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as two men falsely convicted of robbing a bank, and are sentenced to 125 years in jail. They must struggle to survive in prison while their court-appointed lawyer, Len Garber (Joel Brooks), and Garber’s cousin Meredith (JoBeth Williams) try to prove their innocence.

In addition to being very successful at the box office, grossing $101 million, Stir Crazy was voted the 22nd greatest comedy film of all time by Total Film magazine in 2000.
