One Hit Wonders of the ’80s: 1988 – Dan Reed Network

“Ritual” by Dan Reed Network

The Dan Reed Network is a funk rock band formed by Dan Reed in Portland, Oregon. The band was a hard rock band blended with soul, funk, and jazz . This made the band very good for live performances, but labels had a hard time trying to figure out how to promote them.
They eventually signed with Mercury Records. In late 1987, the group released their self-titled debut album which was produced by Bruce Fairbairn, who had worked with Bon Jovi. They released the single “Ritual” off of the album, and it peaked at #38 on May 7, 1988.

However, the record company did not promote the album, so they were not able to follow up with any more hits. The band toured Europe and the UK in the winter of 1989/1990 to support Bon Jovi. The success of this tour led to the Rolling Stones selecting the band as their main support for their first tour in almost 10 years. They released a few more albums, but their record label still couldn’t figure out how to promote them. In October 1993, the band members were starting to take different paths in their lives, but agreed to go on a hiatus and not officially break up.
Dan Reed continues to work as a solo artist as well as collaborating with other artists.

Here is the Dan Reed Network’s only hit, “Ritual”:
