Daily Trivia – 5/4/12

Question: Happy Star Wars Day!! (May the 4th be with you) Complete this sentence from The Empire Strikes Back: “I’d just as soon kiss a ____.”

Last Question: Who asked her sisters Irlene and Louise to share hosting duties on a 1980 variety show?

Answer: Barbara Mandrell

Barbara Mandrell was one of Country Music’s biggest stars in the late ’70s/early ’80s. She scored some huge hits including “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed“, “(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don’t Want to Be Right“, and her signature song, “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool“. She was the first performer and is currently one of two females in country music history to win the Country Music Association’s “Entertainer of the Year” award twice (the other being Taylor Swift).

In 1980, she started the variety show on NBC, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters. In addition to hosts Barbara, Louise, and Irlene Mandrell, the show featured musical guests and comedy sketches. Barbara had a very busy schedule recording, touring, and putting on the TV show, which may have resulted in her getting a vocal strain in 1982. Her doctors made her pull the plug on her show.

Then she suffered a major setback at the height of her music career when she was involved in a serious automobile accident on September 11, 1984. Barbara “sustained multiple fractures in her right leg, including a broken thigh bone, knee and ankle. She also suffered lacerations and abrasions and a severe concussion that caused temporary memory loss, confusion and speech difficulties.” She was able to recover within a couple of years. But, the Country Music landscape was changing with George Strait, Reba McEntire, Randy Travis and Patty Loveless taking over the scene. So, Barbara Mandrell’s music career began to fade away, and she retired in 1997.
