Guns N’ Roses’ monster debut album, Appetite for Destruction was released in 1987. A year later, on the strength of their number 1 hit “Sweet Child o’ Mine“. the album reached number 1 on the Billboard 200. They followed up with the 1988 eight-song album G N’ R Lies. The album’s smash hit “Patience” along with it being a follow-up to Appetite for Destruction propelled G N’ R Lies to be a big seller.
In 1991, Guns N’ Roses repeated the feat of having two big selling albums at the same time when they released Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II. Each of these albums were a double album. And each album had a cover that became a hit. Use Your Illusion I had “Live and Let Die“, and Use Your Illusion II had “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door“.
Although the band was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, they have seen better days. The volitile Axl Rose is the only original member left. Axl stirred some controversy recently when he did not turned away concert-goers who were wearing Slash t-shirts.
Oh well. They will always have the ’80s.
