The Liebster Award

The first thing I ever won in my life was two 45s in a raffle – “Karma Chameleon” by Culture Club and “All Night Long (All Night)” by Lionel Richie. Now, thanks to RobbinsRealm I have won something else – a nomination for The Liebster Award!
I had never heard of this before. It is basically a way for awesome bloggers, with small followings, to recognize and promote each other. At a time when there are millions of bloggers out there, it does feel nice to be recognized.
I would like to thank RobbinsRealm for taking the time to read my blog and nominate me for this award.
And everybody should check out http://robbinsrealm.wordpress.com. He is a film and television buff, and writes outstanding articles. All the articles are awesome and insightful. A couple of my favorites are “Joan Fontaine – Hitchcock’s Only Oscar Winner” and an outstanding article about Philip Stone, the man who played Grady in The Shining“The Shining’s Delbert Grady – Philip Stone’s Most Famous Role”.

As with all blog awards there are certain rules that the recipient must follow.

1. Post the award on your site.

2. The blogger who has been nominated must link back to the person who nominated them.

3. The nominee must answer the eleven questions given to them by the person who nominated them.

4. The person who has been nominated must choose eleven bloggers who have less than 200 followers to answer a set of questions.

5. When you are nominated, the only blogger you can’t nominate is the blogger who nominated you for the award.

With that, here are the questions that were presented to me:

1. Favorite vacation spot?
I have a couple that come to mind. In the continental U.S. it is Orlando, Florida. I am a big time Disney nerd, so The Magic Kingdom is one of my favorite places ever. It is great to feel like a kid again. The attention to detail in that place is incredible. I also love that there is constant music subtly playing. And the people that work there (cast members), or all very friendly and nice, and go out of their way to help you.

And if you want to slow things down, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to is St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The water is clear, and the whole area is very clean.

2. Favorite color?

Blue

3. Favorite dessert?

Gregg’s Death By Chocolate Cake

4. Favorite black and white movie?
“Twelve O’Clock High”
This is a great movie about leadership. When I was in the Navy, it was recommended that we watch this. Gregory Peck is at his best in this. It is about an air group that flew daytime bombing runs during World War II. The group was suffering from poor morale, and they were losing a lot of people. The commander was too nice and too close to his group to instill discipline. So Gregory Peck’s character, Brigadier General Frank Savage, is brought in to get the group in line. Here is a scene of the movie when General Savage arrives at the base, and wastes no time in laying the smackdown on these people.

5. Favorite superhero?

Damn, this is a tough one! It’s a tossup between Batman, Spiderman, and Captain America.
I was first introduced to super heroes with reruns of Adam West’s Batman. It was on every day at 4:00. Around that time in my life, another one of my favorite shows was The Electric Company (say it with me: “Hey you guuuuys!”). There was often a Spider-Man sketch on that show. So that introduced me to him. I then started to collect the Spidey comic books. This led to me getting into Captain America. That was probably my favorite comic super hero.

6. Favorite television show?
Another tough one! Right now it’s The Goldbergs. You know the show’s good when I can watch the reruns, and still laugh a lot. Arrow is another current show that is very well written. I also love Doctor Who. Fingers crossed on the next Doctor!
In the ’80s, I would say The A-Team, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Knight Rider, as well as the family comedies, The Cosby Show, Growing Pains, and Family Ties.

7. Favorite book?
“Centennial” by James A. Michener. I love the mashup of history and fiction, and I really enjoy stories that span generations.

8. Favorite Beatles song?
“A Day in the Life”

9. Favorite dog breed?
Mutt.

10. Favorite beverage?
Can’t go a day without my Dunkin’ Donuts medium iced coffee

11. Favorite nerdy franchise?
Star Wars. Hands down! [drops the mic]

The following are the bloggers I am nominating for the Liebster Blog Award, per the rules I am bound by. And every one of these bloggers are awesome and talented. You should definitely check them out, and subscribe to them.

I may have broken a rule there. I’m pretty sure the last two blogs I listed have more than 200 followers. But they both read all my posts, and comment quite often.
And while I’m at it, I would also like to give a special shout-out to my friend Jim Vilk. He has given me an incredible amount of feedback over the past several years. He does not have a blog, but he has written a book you can purchase on Amazon for as little as $5.69 – The Not-So-Great State Bird Debate

Now we’ll wrap this up with 11 questions I need to pose to the people I have nominated. I’ll use some of the questions from above.

  1. Congrats!

And thanks for the shout-out. Some day I’ll get around to actually blogging, but right now it’s fun to just read yours.

  2. Congratulations on the well-deserved recognition!!! You are awesome!

I appreciate you including me on your list of nominations. Sounds like fun, but I don’t think I qualify based on that followers rule. I can still answer your questions here if you want:
    1. Disney World
    2. Blue
    3. Does the start of Wizard of Oz count? If not, I would go with To Kill a Mockingbird or It’s a Wonderful Life. I enjoyed The Artist from more recently and Sin City.
    4. Favorite comic book was always The Avengers and if I had to pick just one it probably would be Thor or Daredevil.
    5. Hard to pick one, but maybe one of the more obscure guys like Lew Zealand and his boomerang fish. Always enjoy the Swedish Chef, Beeker & Statler and Waldorf.
    6. It was Psych, but that just ended. I am enjoying Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. I always look forward to Modern Family.
    7. don’t have just one favorite – could list dozens
    8. Star Wars for sure
    9. Hulk Hogan, a true Hulkamaniac from the start
    10. Hard to pick one favorite, but The Breakfast Club, Stand By Me, Say Anything, Empire & Jedi, The Karate Kid, Raiders, see I told you couldn’t do it
    11. Really have always been a combo of Jock/Brain, but probably more Jock (though I never taped anybody’s buns together)

    1. Thanks so much! I love your answers too. My favorite muppet is Animal and Statler and Waldorf. The Swedish chef’s fingers always creeped me out! 🙂

Dule Hill from Psych was the first celebrity to follow me on Twitter. I had given up on the Agents of Shield. But, a couple of weeks after that, a friend of mine posted on Facebook that if you gave up on the show, you should check it out again. Holy crap, did that get good! It had felt like they were trying to force chemistry (which never works when you need to force it), and the stories were just alright. I don’t know if they got new writers or something, but this story line with Hydra is incredible.
