Top 40 Songs This Week – October 22, 1983: Songs 40-31

Hi Everybody! Welcome back to a new week of the Top 40 Countdown. This week, we will Return to 1983. This was the very early days of cable TV in my house. I may have had it for just about a year at this point. And I was still glued to MTV. Ah, the good ole days! I know that MTV gets a lot of crap for not playing videos anymore by a lot of people (especially me). But, I’ve been thinking about it. With the music that is out there these days, I would probably not be tuning in to MTV if they did show videos!
Let’s face it, we lived through the peak years of music videos. So, let’s Return to a glorious time – the week ending October 22, 1983, and begin the countdown.

40. “Miracles” by Stacy Lattisaw

R&B singer Stacy Lattisaw kicked off the last countdown we covered – October 4, 1980 – with her hit song “Let Me Be Your Angel“. 3 years later, at the age of 16, she still has an incredible voice.

39. “Tender is the Night” by Jackson Browne

This song really brings me back to the early ’80s. The video features Daryl Hannah, whom Browne was in a relationship with at the time.

38. “Send Her My Love” by Journey

Classic Journey tune from their Frontiers album.

37. “Everyday People” by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts

Joan Jett knocks another out of the park with this cover of the 1968 Sly and the Family Stone hit song.

36. “Everyday I Write the Book” by Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Elvis Costello was one of those singers who I didn’t really care for when I was younger. But, I do appreciate him more now.

35. “Puttin’ On the Ritz” by Taco

Back on our countdown of July 30, 1983, this song was #26. All these weeks later, “Puttin’ on the Ritz” is still hanging around in the top 40.

34. “Crumblin’ Down” by John Cougar Mellencamp

This classic Mellencamp song was the lead single off of his Uh-Huh album. This was the first song to use John’s real last name. I suppose that the Cougar was left in for now so we wouldn’t get confused?

33. “Can’t Shake Loose” by Agnetha Fältskog

This isn’t a bad song by the former ABBA singer. Her voice and the music kind of sounds a little like Olivia Newton-John.

32. “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” by Michael Jackson

This was the sixth single released from Jackson’s legendary Thriller album. It was also his sixth top 10 hit from that album. Michael’s sisters Janet and LaToya provided backing vocals on this song.

31. “Foolin'” by Def Leppard

And we will wrap up today’s list with a rocker by one of my favorite bands – Def Leppard. The girl playing the harp is Perri Lister. Lister was Billy Idol’s girlfriend at the time. They were together for several years, and have a child together – Willem Wolf Broad. The couple broke up in 1989.
This is a great video. I remember watching it all the time in the early days of MTV, and I never got sick of it.

Well, so far so good. I liked every song so far, and the countdown is going to keep getting better! So come back this week, and Return to the ’80s!
