Top 40 Songs This Week – October 22, 1983: Songs 20-11

Welcome back to the Top 40 Countdown. If you missed the previous posts, you can go back and check out songs 40-31 and 30-21. This has been a very good week so far, and today is no different. So, let’s Return to the week ending October 22, 1983, and continue the countdown.

20. “Big Log” by Robert Plant

I like most of Led Zeppelin’s music. This song was Robert Plant’s first solo hit. And it is soooo boring to me.

19. “Say Say Say” by Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson

This song came out at the height of Thrillermania (I just made that word up). However, this song was not on Thriller. It was on McCartney’s fourth solo album, Tug of War. If this had been on the Thriller album instead of the McCartney/Jackson song “The Girl is Mine“, then it would have made the legendary album even better.

18. “Modern Love” by David Bowie

This is one of my favorite David Bowie songs. It is from the great Let’s Dance album, which reignited Bowie’s career.

17. “Tonight, I Celebrate my Love” by Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack

This is a really nice duet.

16. “If Anyone Falls” by Stevie Nicks

This is one of my favorite Stevie Nicks tunes. I think it is very underrated.

15. “Uptown Girl” by Billy Joel

This was a fun song from Billy Joel’s classic An Innocent Man album. It is famous for it’s video, which featured Joel’s future wife Christie Brinkley.

14. “(She’s) Sexy + 17” by The Stray Cats

Time for some Rockabilly! The Stray Cats are one of those bands that I didn’t appreciate when I first heard them. But, I like them a lot now.

13. “Tell Her About It” by Billy Joel

Well that didn’t take long. Here’s Billy Joel again! This was his first hit from An Innocent Man. I think this was the first Billy Joel song I was aware of. I’m sure I had heard his earlier hits before, but I didn’t know singers names at the time. Now that I was listening to my own music, and thanks to MTV, I became very well aware of Billy Joel.

12. “Suddenly Last Summer” by The Motels

There is just something about this song that is so mesmerizing to me. I love it! Very ’80s.

11. “The Safety Dance” by Men Without Hats

Speaking of being “very ’80s”, could this song have been released in any other decade? I think not! Totally ’80s sound, and a lot of fun. Not to mention, a crazy video. Any video that features a Maypole is a lot of fun!

That wraps up today’s list. We will finish up the countdown tomorrow with some classic ’80s tunes!

  1. Everytime I go to your Top 40’s post, my computer either freezes or really slows down until it becomes completely useless and I have to reboot. I wonder why . Anyway, you have a great selection here. I love Say, Say, Say and we have a cd of that song. The rest , I also like. Oh, and Billy Joel’s Just the way You Are was my parents’ theme song at their wedding.

    1. Been having issues lately as well.

I agree that “Anyone Falls” is very good and highly underrated. On the whole, though, this week’s list has left me underwhelmed. Yesterday’s ten was the best for me, with the Moody Blues, my favorite Eurythmics song ever and Huey and the News. Hope the top ten is better…and that it will get “The Safety Dance” out of my head…

      1. As far as “The Safety Dance” goes, it sounds like this is a job for the A-Team! 🙂
I think the top 10 will be better than today’s list. But you would probably still like yesterday’s better. Let’s put it this way, there’s not going to be an “Oh, I forgot about that song!” moment. But, it’s pretty solid. And there’s supposed to be a Prince song. But, since he’s an ass, I’ll be replacing it with something else that’s pretty cool.

Thanks for letting me know about the issues with the page! Maybe I’ll have to change the format. I’ll link to the songs through the title instead of embedding the videos. Then I’ll just put an album cover so that there’s something visual there. I’ve had a lot more viewers than usual lately, so I don’t want to lose anybody!

    2. I love that Billy Joel song!
Oh, that stinks about the computer slowing down! I wonder if WordPress changed something. Maybe the videos are messing it up.
I’ll try a different format tomorrow, and we can see how that works. Maybe I’ll just link to the video through the title, and just include the album cover on the page. Thanks for letting me know about that!
