All this time, I thought the singer was black. Maybe therewas a version by a black singer?

Yes! The original version was in the early 70s by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. The lead singer was Teddy Pendergrass.

My car radio station is tuned in on Classic Rock, and I guess the original is what gets played. The black voice of the singer is what I remember. lol
