30 Day Song Challenge: Day 19 – A Song From Your Favorite Album

“Escape” by Journey

I’ll go with my obvious choice today. There are some great rock tracks on here, including “Keep On Runnin'” and “Escape”. There some great slow songs, such as “Open Arms”, “Still They Ride”, and “Mother, Father”. And don’t forget the iconic “Don’t Stop Believin'”

It even inspired a video game, for cryin’ out loud!

Here is the title track.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 18 – A Song That You Wish You Heard On the Radio

“Don’t Start Thinking (I’m Alone Tonight)” by Night Ranger

This was an extremely tough one! There are so many choices. I’ll have to do a top 10 list for this.
But for now, I will pick one of my favorite songs from one of the most underrated albums of the ’80s – “Don’t Start Thinking (I’m Alone Tonight)” from Night Ranger’s 1988 Man In Motion.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 17 – A Song That You Hear Often On the Radio

“Harden My Heart” by Quarterflash

This doesn’t need to be a song you like, right? I hear this song on the radio now than I did when it first came out! It feels like it is on XM’s 80’S on 8 channel every hour. And there is a local radio station here that actually plays all 80s music on most weekends. And guess which song I always catch in the car when I put it on:

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 16 – A Song That You Used to Love but Now Hate

“Two Hearts” by Phil Collins

I liked this song so much when I first heard it, that I bought the 45.

[for young readers, the 45 is an album version of a cassette single. To even younger readers, the 45 is the equivalent to downloading a single song from iTunes, except the 45 took up actual physical space]

It ended up being a waste of money. If I just waited a day, I would have found that all I needed to do is turn on the radio any time, and this song would be playing. I got so sick of it, that I may have only played the album only once or twice.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 14 – A Song That No One Would Expect You to Love

“Master of the House” from Les Miserables

On this blog, I have mentioned a lot of music that I love – everything from rap, to pop, to rock, to heavy metal. So, I’ll throw a little twist in here. My wife and I have season tickets to the local Performing Art Center, and Les Miserables is one of our favorites. I like some musicals a lot, but there are others that are extremely horrible. I don’t like any of the old ones like Oklahoma or The Music Man.
And there’s another ’80s musical that was the worst torture that I ever experienced in my life – Cats. How that stayed on Broadway so long, I’ll never know.
Les Miserables, on the other hand, was great. The music was powerful. There were actually action scenes too! Jean Valjean was on the run from the law. This takes place during the French Revolution, so there were battle scenes also. Of course there was a love story. The story could be pretty dark, but it also had comedy. Here is an example of that, with one of the most memorable songs of the show.

The actual song starts at around 56 seconds:

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 13 – A Song That is a Guilty Pleasure

“That Sensation” by Samantha Fox

I always go on and on about Debbie Gibson, so I decided to go with somebody else as the Guilty Pleasure today.

She came around the same time that I started going to dances/mixers. My friends and I really got into it when Samantha Fox came on. It didn’t hurt that she was extremely easy to look at. I used to have the poster that you see here. I was never into posters, so that was about the only one I ever had.

I don’t think “That Sensation” was played on the radio, but it was my favorite song off of her self titled album.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 12 – A Song From a Band You Hate

“Once Bitten, Twice Shy” by Great White

Hate is such a strong word! But, it comes pretty close to how I feel about Great White after February 20, 2003. That is the night that 100 people died in a fire that was started by the band at The Station. This wasn’t a stadium where they decided to set off pyrotechnics. It was a night club. Maybe they knew that their music alone couldn’t get the audience into the concert, so they decided to use pyrotechnics. They weren’t the only ones with blood on their hands. The cheap-ass owners, the Derderian brothers (Michael and Jeffrey) installed crappy sound insulation foam which caught fire easily.
Although, Great White wasn’t 100% at fault, and one of their band members died (lead guitarist Ty Longley), they will never get a dime from me. Plus it doesn’t help that I never care much for their music anyway. I much prefer Whitesnake or White Lion.

30 Day Song Challenge: Day 11 – A Song From Your Favorite Band

“Save Me” by Queen

This was a tough one! My favorite band changes daily. I almost went with Journey, but I believe that I already have a couple of songs by them on here, and there will be more.

So, today, Queen is my favorite band. Each member is a musical genius. Freddie Mercury has the best rock voice of all time. Brian May is an outstanding and unique guitarist. Roger Taylor is a great drummer and has a really good voice himself. And John Deacon has perhaps two of the most recognizable bass riffs in rock music – “Another One Bites the Dust” and “Under Pressure”

Here is one of my favorite songs by Queen, and perhaps one of their must underrated:
