Quote of the Day: Dragon’s Lair

Dragon’s Lair: The fantasy adventure where you become a valiant knight, on a quest to rescue the fair princess from the clutches of an evil dragon. You control the actions of a daring adventurer, finding his way through the castle of a dark wizard, who has enchanted it with treacherous monsters and obstacles. In the mysterious caverns below the castle, your odyssey continues against the awesome forces that oppose your efforts to reach the Dragon’s Lair. Lead on, adventurer. Your quest awaits!

The Dragon’s Lair arcade game was released on this day 35 years ago (June 19, 1983). After this date, you could find me glued to this game in the arcade at Cranston Bowl, every Saturday morning after our bowling matches. It didn’t matter that it cost a whopping 50 cents a game.

Daily Trivia – 1/18/11

Question: What actress, two months younger than Bea Arthur, played her mom on The Golden Girls?

Last Question: What board game promised: “You do not have to be a Rembrandt – stick figures and squiggly lines will do just fine”?

Answer: Pictionary

Pictionary came out in 1985. The game is played with teams with players trying to identify specific words from their teammates’ drawings. Each team moves a piece on a game board formed by a sequence of squares. Each square has a letter or shape identifying the type of picture to be drawn on it. The objective is to be the first team to reach the last space on the board.

Thankfully, you really don’t need to be a Rembrandt to play this game. As a matter of fact, it may be a disadvantage to be a good artist in this game. By the time you finish drawing your work of art, time could run out before your team could guess. All you need to do is draw stick figures really fast, and hope that your teammates can guess what you are scribbling. Over the years, I found that if your team is having trouble guessing what you drew, pounding the paper with the point of the pencil does not always help them guess the right answer faster. And neither does drawing circles around your picture over and over again.

This game can be fun. Especially if you are playing with fun people with a great sense of humor. It is funny seeing some of the drawings that people come up with, and listening to them explain what they were thinking when they were drawing their picture.
