Daily Trivia – 5/16/11

Question: In what sitcom did Sherman Hemsley play the deacon of a Philadelphia church?

Last Question: In 1986, what was the theme song of the claymation California Raisins?

Answer: “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”

In 1986, the concept of dancing raisins singing the 1968 Marvin Gaye song “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” was created on behalf of the California Raisin Advisory Board.

The California Raisins were claymation characters whose popularity exploded from 1986 through the late ’80s. The lead vocals were sung by Buddy Miles, who was a founding member of The Electric Flag in 1967, then as a member of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys from 1969 through to January 1970.

Like most popular fads of the ’80s, a Saturday morning cartoon was created. But The California Raisin Show only lasted 13 episodes. They also had four studio albums released through 1987 to 1988, and their signature song, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” landed on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Raisins could be seen everywhere. They were on lunch boxes, notebooks, clothing, posters, bedsheets, and even Halloween costumes.
But, they were best known for their commercials. There were even commercials that starred music legends Michael Jackson and Ray Charles.

Here are some of the commercials:
