Song of the Day: “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang

R-187404-1399047990-2517What better way to start a new Return to the ’80s series than a little “Celebration”?! On this day, “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang became the #1 song in America. To this day, there cannot be a happy gathering without this song being played. Lead singer J.T. Taylor’s mother predicted that the song would be a smash hit. Taylor told Billboard: “My mother told me when she heard it, ‘You’re gonna play this song for the rest of your life – so get ready!” The song was released as the first single from their twelfth album, Celebrate!, and it was the band’s first and only single to reach No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. On March 24, 2021, “Celebration” was added to the National Recording Registry for being “culturally historically or aesthetically significant”.
