The Liebster Award 2: Electric Boogaloo

Less than a year after I was nominated for The Liebster Award, we now have a sequel thanks to Vinnieh! Vinnieh has a totally awesome movie web site. You should go check it out early and often at https://vinnieh.wordpress.com/. There are a lot of movie reviews – for old and new movies, as well as other articles about actors/actresses. There are other fun articles as well. For example, as we just passed Valentines Day, there were a couple of appropriately themed articles – What are the sexiest scenes in film? and What are your favourite romantic movie scenes?. In the midst of all this, there is a series of James Bond reviews happening over there. And it looks like we are heading into the ’80s Bond films now. So thank you very much vinnieh!

The rules for accepting this award are as follows:

  • Thank the person who nominated you.
  • Answer the questions from the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate 11 bloggers for the award.
  • Create 11 questions for the bloggers you nominate.

OK, here are the questions I need to answer:

  1. Do you prefer watching a film in the cinema or at home?  I would prefer going to the theater. But since I don’t get much of a chance, I usually watch at home.
  2. Do you have any unique talents? OK, You have to swear to God you won’t laugh:
  3. What is your ideal day like? All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine.
  4. Which actor or actress do you think is the most gorgeous? This is a tough one! I could come up with a long list. But, off the top of my head, I’ll have to say Vanessa Williams. She was Miss America in the ’80s for a very short time. And I just saw her in something on TV not too long ago, and she still looks gorgeous!
  5. What do you enjoy the most about blogging? Interacting with people all over the world, and making new friends. Obviously, I love to Return to the ’80s, but back then, I would have never dreamed it was possible to make friends all over the world.
  6. What posts of yours is your personal favourite? One of my favorites was ’80s Back to School Accessories. I just whipped it up in less than 30 minutes, and it was a lot of fun. I also love the Top 40 Countdowns. We are long overdue for a new one. But, real life and being buried by this year’s New England snow keeps setting back my schedule. I’ll try to pick this back up within the next week or two.
  7. What’s the best holiday you have ever been on? On my honeymoon, we flew across the country and spent a few days in San Diego, drove up to Anaheim, went to Disney for a few more days, then went on a cruise for 7 days.
  8. Have you ever met anyone famous? Not really. About 11 or 12 years ago, we were in an empty Miami airport very early in the morning. I was at one of the stores looking through some overpriced books. This may sound crazy, but I got a chill down my spine and felt the temperature drop.  Then I heard somebody behind me complaining very loudly, saying that he can’t believe they didn’t have a cart for him to ride in, and he had to walk. My wife was standing in front of me, and her eyes went wide open. I turned around and it was O.J. Simpson surrounded by an entourage of people walking by us. Then about 10 minutes later another entourage of people were walking by us. And in the middle of them was Todd Bridges!
  9. Describe yourself in three words. Awesome, bodacious dude
  10. What film have you watched and never want to watch again? Bill Cosby: Himself. I remember watching this concert movie on HBO all the time before The Cosby Show came out. I believe I was 12 or 13 at the time. My stomach hurt from laughing so hard. A year or 2 ago, I saw this come on TV again, so I tried watching it. I didn’t laugh once. I couldn’t watch the whole thing. And now with all the accusations that have come to light, I definitely can’t look at him the same way again.
  11. Do you enjoy awards season and are you excited for the Oscars? I enjoy the spirit of awards season as the arts get celebrated. However, I can’t get excited for the Oscars. It’s too political for me. If the winners were selected by merit, instead of by sucking up to the right people, I could live with it. There is no way you will ever convince me in any time or galaxy that Annie Hall was a better movie than Star Wars. And the year that Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan, I checked out for good. I may check out the opening, if I think of it, to see if the host does a good job, or if it is a train wreck. Either way, I may be entertained for about 15 minutes.

The Liebster Award

The first thing I ever won in my life was two 45s in a raffle – “Karma Chameleon” by Culture Club and “All Night Long (All Night)” by Lionel Richie. Now, thanks to RobbinsRealm I have won something else – a nomination for The Liebster Award!
I had never heard of this before. It is basically a way for awesome bloggers, with small followings, to recognize and promote each other. At a time when there are millions of bloggers out there, it does feel nice to be recognized.
I would like to thank RobbinsRealm for taking the time to read my blog and nominate me for this award.
And everybody should check out http://robbinsrealm.wordpress.com. He is a film and television buff, and writes outstanding articles. All the articles are awesome and insightful. A couple of my favorites are “Joan Fontaine – Hitchcock’s Only Oscar Winner” and an outstanding article about Philip Stone, the man who played Grady in The Shining“The Shining’s Delbert Grady – Philip Stone’s Most Famous Role”.

As with all blog awards there are certain rules that the recipient must follow.

1. Post the award on your site.

2. The blogger who has been nominated must link back to the person who nominated them.

3. The nominee must answer the eleven questions given to them by the person who nominated them.

4. The person who has been nominated must choose eleven bloggers who have less than 200 followers to answer a set of questions.

5. When you are nominated, the only blogger you can’t nominate is the blogger who nominated you for the award.

With that, here are the questions that were presented to me:

1. Favorite vacation spot?
I have a couple that come to mind. In the continental U.S. it is Orlando, Florida. I am a big time Disney nerd, so The Magic Kingdom is one of my favorite places ever. It is great to feel like a kid again. The attention to detail in that place is incredible. I also love that there is constant music subtly playing. And the people that work there (cast members), or all very friendly and nice, and go out of their way to help you.

And if you want to slow things down, one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to is St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The water is clear, and the whole area is very clean.

2. Favorite color?

3. Favorite dessert?

Gregg’s Death By Chocolate Cake

4. Favorite black and white movie?
“Twelve O’Clock High”
This is a great movie about leadership. When I was in the Navy, it was recommended that we watch this. Gregory Peck is at his best in this. It is about an air group that flew daytime bombing runs during World War II. The group was suffering from poor morale, and they were losing a lot of people. The commander was too nice and too close to his group to instill discipline. So Gregory Peck’s character, Brigadier General Frank Savage, is brought in to get the group in line. Here is a scene of the movie when General Savage arrives at the base, and wastes no time in laying the smackdown on these people.

5. Favorite superhero?

Damn, this is a tough one! It’s a tossup between Batman, Spiderman, and Captain America.
I was first introduced to super heroes with reruns of Adam West’s Batman. It was on every day at 4:00. Around that time in my life, another one of my favorite shows was The Electric Company (say it with me: “Hey you guuuuys!”). There was often a Spider-Man sketch on that show. So that introduced me to him. I then started to collect the Spidey comic books. This led to me getting into Captain America. That was probably my favorite comic super hero.

6. Favorite television show?
Another tough one! Right now it’s The Goldbergs. You know the show’s good when I can watch the reruns, and still laugh a lot. Arrow is another current show that is very well written. I also love Doctor Who. Fingers crossed on the next Doctor!
In the ’80s, I would say The A-Team, The Dukes of Hazzard, and Knight Rider, as well as the family comedies, The Cosby Show, Growing Pains, and Family Ties.

7. Favorite book?
“Centennial” by James A. Michener. I love the mashup of history and fiction, and I really enjoy stories that span generations.

8. Favorite Beatles song?
“A Day in the Life”

9. Favorite dog breed?

10. Favorite beverage?
Can’t go a day without my Dunkin’ Donuts medium iced coffee

11. Favorite nerdy franchise?
Star Wars. Hands down! [drops the mic]

The following are the bloggers I am nominating for the Liebster Blog Award, per the rules I am bound by. And every one of these bloggers are awesome and talented. You should definitely check them out, and subscribe to them.

I may have broken a rule there. I’m pretty sure the last two blogs I listed have more than 200 followers. But they both read all my posts, and comment quite often.
And while I’m at it, I would also like to give a special shout-out to my friend Jim Vilk. He has given me an incredible amount of feedback over the past several years. He does not have a blog, but he has written a book you can purchase on Amazon for as little as $5.69 – The Not-So-Great State Bird Debate

Now we’ll wrap this up with 11 questions I need to pose to the people I have nominated. I’ll use some of the questions from above.
