Phil Collins March Madness – Sweet Sixteen

It’s that time of year again! Welcome to the 5th Annual Return to the ’80s March Madness Tournament. If you are new to this site, each year one artist is chosen for the March Madness Tournament. We pit their own hit songs against each other. As with last year, voting will be done right here on the site, Twitter – @Returntothe80s,  And the Return to the ’80s group page on Facebook.

Previous winners have been:
2018 – “Out of Touch” in the Hall & Oates March Madness
2019 – “Purple Rain” in the Prince March Madness
2020 – “Crazy For You” in the Madonna March Madness
2021 – “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” in Whitney Houston March Madness

This year we are going t=with the legendary Phil Collins. This will be his solo hits, and not Genesis songs, as he had enough to make the Sweet Sixteen on his own.

This Tournament is in collaboration with RealWeegieMidget Reviews as Gilll from that site reviews the Phil Collins film, Buster. Collins had a couple of hit songs from that movie. It was not widely seen in the U.S., so you may be interested in reading the review. So go check it out!

First, check out the podcast episode as we review each song in the tournament.

Now, let’s get going with the Sweet Sixteen! Voting will be open for this round until Sunday, April 3. The Elite 8 will be posted on Monday, April 4. In addition to voting on Twitter – @Returntothe80s and the Return to the ’80s group page on Facebook, feel free to comment your picks below. 1 vote per battle please. Whitney Houston March Madness – Elite 8

Whitney March MadnessBetter late than never, but the 4th annual Return to the ’80s March Madness tournament is here!

This year, I was going to go with Phil Collins, but with my busy schedule, I have to jump right into the elite 8. And Collins had way too many top 40 hits to limit it to just 8.

Since Whitney had 7 number one hits in the ’80s, a Wild Card tournament was held to fill in the final slot. The winner was “You Give Good Love.”

Since this tournament will go into April, there is literally no time to waste! So let’s get this party started!
This round will close on Friday April 2.

You can click on the song titles to get the YouTube videos. The poll is at the bottom.

You Give Good Love” vs. “Saving All My Love For You

How Will I Know” vs. “The Greatest Love of All

I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” vs. “Didn’t We Almost Have It All

So Emotional” vs. “Where Do Broken Hearts Go

Whitney Houston March Madness

Hi Everybody! It’s that time of year again! This will be the 4th annual Return to the ’80s March Madness. If you are new to this site, each year one artist is chosen for the March Madness Tournament. We pit their own hit songs against each other. As with last year, voting will be done right here on the site and on Twitter – @Returntothe80s.

Previous winners have been:
2018 – “Out of Touch” in the Hall & Oates March Madness
2019 – “Purple Rain” in the Prince March Madness
2020 – “Crazy For You” in the Madonna March Madness

This year, I was going to go with Phil Collins, but with my busy schedule, I have to jump right into the elite 8. And Collins had way too many top 40 hits to limit it to just 8.
However, Whitney is the perfect fit this year. She had 7 straight number 1 hits. And now we can have 4 songs battle it out in this wild card for the final slot.

Voting will close on Sunday March 14.

Here are the songs that will be doing battle this week. You can vote on the poll at the bottom. You can click on the song title to get the YouTube video.

You Give Good Love

This was Whitney’s first single released from her debut album. And what a start! It didn’t top the mainstream chart, but it did land at #3. The song won Favorite Soul/R&B Single at the 13th American Music Awards, and was nominated for Best R&B Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female at the 28th Grammy Awards in 1986.

All at Once

I was shocked to discover that “All At Once” was not released as an official single in the U.S. I think I remember hearing it on the radio a lot. This was always one of my favorites by her.

Love Will Save the Day

This song from Whitney’s sophomore album ended her streak of seven straight #1s. While it did not make the eight in a row, it still managed to hit the top 10, peaking at #9, despite the fact that there was no music video for the song.

One Moment in Time

And last, but certainly not least, here is the song for the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea. The song was Houston’s third number one in the UK Singles Chart, and reached number five on the US Billboard Hot 100. I couldn’t name another Olympic theme song. Any of them would pale in comparison to this.

So there you have it. Let the voting begin!

Madonna March Madness – Elite 8

Madonna-March-Madness-2 Time for the next round of the Madonna March Madness! The Sweet Sixteen was very interesting, and the Elite Eight is going to be very tough to predict. In the last round, there were only 5 votes in each battle. I thank you five very much for taking the time to come to this page and vote. I truly appreciate it.

Most of the voting took place on Twitter. There weren’t any battles with close enough results for the web page results to make a difference. That could change this round. The numbers on the Twitter voting ranged from 67 to 88 votes per battle.

Hall & Oates March Madness Tournament: Final Four

Wow! What a finish to the Elite 8! There were two blowouts, and two tight matches. And one of those matches had to go into overtime! And the overtime was very exciting. I posted the overtime poll on Twitter, the 80s Fans Unite!!! Facebook group, and the Return to the ’80s Facebook group. “Kiss On My List” defeated “You Make My Dreams” by the narrow margin of 23-22. On the the 80s Fans Unite!!! page, “Dreams” squeaked by 5-4. The tie breaker was on the Return to the ’80s Facebook group page where “Dreams” won handily 6-0, moving it on to the next round. We’re getting down to the nitty gritty now! You can place a vote in each bracket
